About us
Hello! My name is Isiah Smith (US), and I’m co-leading a group with Marnix ‘t Hart (Netherlands). We’re just two guys who love philosophy. Marnix graduated from Edinburgh with a Master’s degree in Philosophy, and I’m currently working on my Bachelor’s degree. We’ve realized that we have different outlooks on philosophy, and quite frankly, we enjoy discussing why we believe certain ideas, what they mean for us personally, and what they mean on a global scale.
Because of this, we’ve decided to start a philosophy group. We want to create an in-person community where we can come together and discuss life’s deeper questions. Does life intrinsically have meaning? If so, what is it? How did we get here? What is truth, and can we truly know it? What are ethics and morals, and do these things actually exist?
We would love to formally invite you to join us as we explore these topics. We hope to see you soon!

Philosophy & Friends: Will AI ever be conscious?
Location not specified yetWelcome to our philosophy gathering. We’re really glad you’re here. We’re meeting because we believe that asking deep questions is part of what it means to be human, questions about meaning, truth, morality, freedom, and how we ought to live. Our hope is to create a space that feels thoughtful but relaxed, serious but welcoming, a place where curiosity is encouraged, disagreement is respectful, and no one feels pressure to have everything figured out.
We’ll discuss Clare College - Uni of Cambridge article "Will AI ever be conscious". Which can be found here.
We encourage you to read the article and highlight what stands out to you. We believe there’s plenty of interesting material to spark good conversations. As always, the goal is not to arrive at final answers, but to think carefully together and learn from each other’s perspectives.
