Welcome to our philosophy gathering. We’re really glad you’re here. We’re meeting because we believe that asking deep questions is part of what it means to be human, questions about meaning, truth, morality, freedom, and how we ought to live. Our hope is to create a space that feels thoughtful but relaxed, serious but welcoming, a place where curiosity is encouraged, disagreement is respectful, and no one feels pressure to have everything figured out.

For this week’s discussion, we’ll read a short book review that offers a brief introduction to the work of philosopher Charles Taylor, particularly his ideas about secularism, belief, and the search for meaning. It explores how our understanding of the world has changed as belief in God has become less taken for granted, and introduces Taylor’s idea of “fullness”: the sense that life can be deeply meaningful or fulfilling. It raises some interesting questions about where meaning comes from and what, if anything, lies beyond our everyday experience.

As always, the goal is not to arrive at final answers, but to think carefully together and learn from each other’s perspectives.
