RI Philharmonic Open Rehearsal - The Blue Danube
Details
Hey everyone! We're hoping to post more culture/arts related meetups in 2026, and we figured this is great way to kick off the year. The RI Philharmonic's open rehearsal nights are a great way to see some fantastic classical pieces at a pretty reasonable price.
TLDR Note: The event is unlikely to sell out, but we don't know if door tickets are available so we recommend buying in advance. Tickets are $25.00 see link at bottom of description. Please make sure you buy tickets for the 23rd as there are multiple performances. We'll meet in the lobby half an hour before start time. We know traffic/parking can be difficult so if you come late we'll post our seat location in the comments.
The Rhode Island Philharmonic offers an "open rehearsal" performance before many of the shows during the regular season. It makes for the perfect way to see some great classical musical performances on a budget and without all the pomp and circumstance many picture when attending a classical concert. Tickets are $25.00 and there is open seating so we can sit anywhere we'd like. Depending on our size, we may still want to sit towards the back away from other attendees, but we can figure that out on the day. Please do keep conversation to a minimum during the performance out of respect for others.
Better yet, the event has a casual dress code. Even the performers will likely be in jeans and a t-shirt, so you don't have to worry about how you're dressed. But hey if you want to wear your tux then go for it lol The performance will run for roughly 150 minutes with a 20 minute intermission. Despite rehearsal being in the title, trust us the orchestra is show ready. However, you're likely still to see the conductor ask for them to replay some sections to really perfect the performance. However, they do typically play the full piece before going back to not break the flow. It's actually interesting to see an elite orchestra fine tune their performance. It always sounds perfect the first time around to me lol
Concessions will also be open if you want anything. The Vet doesn't have hard liquor, but they do have wine, beer, and hard seltzers if you want a drink especially after work on a Friday.
Please make sure you're buying a ticket for the performance on the 23rd. The main event is the following day so it can be a little confusing. If the website is asking you to pick a seat online, you selected the wrong show.
Let's meet in the lobby around 5pm. We'll wait until close to showtime before we head to our seats. Phone reception can be a little iffy at times so I may not get messages once I'm in the hall itself, but I'll post our rough seat location if there are any late comers due to traffic and parking. The Vet does have a parking lot, not sure if it will be open for this show and it may be a paid lot. Providence Place is also next door if you don't mind paying.
After the show we'll walk over to somewhere nearby to have a couple drinks and talk. Where we go depends on the weather of course. Our goal is to head to Track 15 which is a moderate walk away. We figure many of us will be hungry after the show and there's also a bar with some great drinks.
You've likely heard a rendition of the famous piece "The Beautiful Blue Danube" by J. Strauss at some point in your life. Trust me, give it a quick google and it will likely ring a bell either from a film or another piece of media. Seeing it performed live seems like a great way to kick off what we hope will be a year of including more arts focused events to mix things up a bit. Don't worry, our usual bar/nightlife events aren't going anywhere.
The concert features the Dvorak: Three Slavonic Dances. In addition to the iconic piece the concert is named after it also includes Chausson's Poeme which has some fantastic violin solos. Additionally the orchestra will perform Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 which is a dynamic and high energy piece that should be fantastic to hear in person.
Despite our small size, Rhode Island has a fantastic philharmonic orchestra. It's not uncommon for them to share the stage with well respected conductors and Grammy winning artists during their regular season and special events throughout the year. Last year's season even ended with a gala featuring Yo Yo Ma. This concert appears to be an entirely Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra performance lead by their musical director Ruth Reinhardt.
Please leave a comment or message the host(s) if you have any questions. See you then!
