Another Challenging Hike: South Sandia Peak

Based on a few requests, I am scheduling another challenging hike while we can still hike in the higher elevations. This will be a hike to South Sandia Peak. This will be 12.5 miles total starting with 3200 feet of elevation change steadily going up 7 miles along the South Crest Trail. We will then have 3600 feet of elevation change coming down over 5.5 miles along the Embudito and Three Guns trails. Since we will not be coming back the same way, it is important for those signing up to feel confident they can make the full hike. Please bring sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water, and food for lunch and snacks. Poles can be helpful and bring a headlamp just in case. I think this will take 6-8 hours to complete. No dogs unless you know they can handle this distance.

We will meet at the Walmart and carpool up dropping some cars at the bottom of Three Gun Trail (see second AllTrails link below) before heading to the Canyon Estates Grand Enchantment Trailhead (see the first AllTrails link below or for those who have done my Travertine Falls Hondo Canyon hike, it is the same place).
