Hoodoo Trail and Optional Seismosaurus Trail.
Details
Hoodoo Trail in the Ojito Wilderness is a 3.3-mile out-and-back trail near San Ysidro, New Mexico. It is considered a moderate hike with an elevation gain of 278 feet. The trail offers scenic views of the Ojito Wilderness Area, featuring unique hoodoo rock formations and four distinct viewpoints along the route. This is an area where dinosaur fossils in the Morrison Formation were found and Tony, the official paleontologist for Making strides, will be joining to share about the formations.
There are a few steep or rocky sections to navigate, and several rocky outcroppings where we can take a break and enjoy the view. Boots and trekking poles can be helpful.
As an optional second hike on the way back (we will set up carpools based on if planning to do this hike), we will do the Seismosaurus trail. This is an easy 2.2 mile out and back with some petroglyphs on the horizontal rocks of a small mesa and it says some petrified trees.
Even if you do both hikes, you should be home in plenty of time for the Super Bowl kick off at 4:30.
The weather will be warmer, so dress in layers and bring plenty of water. There is no shade so a hat and sunscreen recommended. Dogs are welcome on leash.
You’ll need to drive along a dirt road to reach the trailhead. While there are some rough patches, it is usually manageable in a two-wheel-drive vehicle.
