Origami in the Garden
Details
Come check out interesting structures at Origami in the garden. It will be a leisurely stroll through the “garden”. Should take us an hour to an hour and a half at the most. Entry to view the various Origami structures is by donation.
Created by Santa Fe artists Jennifer and Kevin Box, Origami In The Garden is a monumental three acre outdoor sculpture exhibition. Kevin Box takes origami to another level, transforming paper into museum quality metal sculpture through processes he pioneered in teamwork with foundries, fabrication shops, and his studio staff. These remarkable artworks feel at home in the wondrous settings of gardens, since paper originates in plant life and origami is made of paper.
Afterwards, we will proceed to Cerrillos Hills State Park and do a hike. There are many different hikes we can take. The park has five miles of trails which offer scenic views of the Galisteo Basin and surrounding areas. Historic mine shafts are safeguarded and signed with interpretive information. Cerrillos Hills, New Mexico's 34th State Park, is a year-round, day-use park located off the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway (State Highway 14) between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. You will cross paths with over 1,100 years of mining history here along the five miles of trails and enjoy spectacular views of the Sandia, Ortiz, Jemez, and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges.
On Tuesday, 2nd of June, we will meet at the 550 Rail Runner upper level parking at 9 am. From there we can coordinate to carpool to the Origami in the garden location. Please plan on paying the driver for the use of the vehicle and fuel. Ten ($10) would be reasonable.
We will drive on I25 north to Waldo Canyon road (exit 267). Note: this part of the road will be dirt/gravel for eight (8) miles. We will wait for the arrival of all the vehicles in a large parking area off the exit. Once all are accounted for, we will proceed to Origami in the Garden.
After the hike, we can have lunch at the Cerrillos Hills state park visitor center in the village of Cerrillos. There are various curio shops in the area and the village of Cerrillos is quaint.
