4.7 mile loop with 810’ elev gain. Walking time is 2-3 hours. The hike is rated as moderate. The trail does offer some shade.

Dogs on leashes are welcome. Bring your hat, sun screen, bug spray and plenty of water. It will be warm outside. Hiking poles are recommended.

The trail offers scenic views along with some shaded areas. The path travels through areas of pines, Gambel oaks, crossing of seasonal streams (no promises of flowing water) and limestone outcrops.

Parking: Without a Federal park pass (America the Beautiful, etc) there is a $5 parking fee. Parking at or near the Cienega Canyon Picnic Grounds is likely limited. Therefore, we will carpool from the Smith’s Parking Lot, 200 Tramway SE. If you have a federal pass, please bring it.

We want to avoid the heat as much as possible. Please be at the Smith’s parking lot by 0745. We will leave Smith’s at 0800. After the hike, everyone is welcome to meet at the Burger Boy in Cedar Crest. Address: 12023 NM-14.
