Valles Caldera, Cerro Abrigo Trail Loop

This hike is located in the back country area of the Valles Caldera National Preserve, Jemez Mtns. I know this hike is more than a month away, but the national park service issues a limited number of daily backcountry vehicle passes and we did not want to miss this opportunity. We have already secured 3 passes, one for each vehicle going. Each pass allows for the driver and up to 3 passengers per vehicle. At this point, we have the x3 volunteer drivers. The total group size is limited to x12.

7.1 mile loop with 1066’ elev gain. Walking time is about 2.5 to 3 hours. The hike is rated as moderate. I took this hike in JUN, it was amazing.

No Pets: The NPS does not allow pets within the preserve.
Bring your hat, sun screen and plenty of water. Temps may be chilly in the morning and then warm up towards the end of the hike. Hiking poles and a wind breaker are both highly recommended.

The trail offers scenic views of the Valles Caldera along with some shaded areas. There is a good chance of seeing prairie dogs, rocky mountain elk, mule deer, eagles and or hawks.The first hour or so of the hike is used to gain elevation. The remainder of the hike is easier than the start.

Parking: See above w/ respect to number of vehicles and hikers slotted for this event. We will meet at the Rio Rancho Home Depot parking lot in NLT 0630 (7700 US Hwy 550). Our entry into the backcountry is 0900.

After the hike, everyone is welcome to meet at the Jemez Mountain Brewhouse located in Jemez Springs, 17691 NM-4.
