I was looking through some of our past hikes and realized we haven't been out to the Hoodoo Trail all year! That's definitely something we need to fix.

This has always been one of my favorite places to explore, and it's absolutely worth coming back to.

Located in the Ojito Wilderness, this trail takes us through some incredible desert scenery, with colorful sandstone formations, unusual rock formations known as hoodoos, and beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

There are four distinct areas along the route where we can explore these fascinating formations, so we'll take our time, enjoy the scenery, and stop for plenty of pictures.

Hike Details:
Distance: 3.3 miles, out and back
Elevation Gain: 272 feet
Difficulty: Moderate
Terrain: Sandy and rocky, with a few steeper sections

Although the elevation gain is relatively low, there are some rocky and uneven sections, so please don't let the shorter distance fool you.

A Few Things to Know:
The trailhead is accessed by a dirt road. There are some rough sections, but it's generally manageable in a two-wheel-drive vehicle when conditions are good. Carpooling is encouraged.
Cell service can be spotty, so please don't rely on having a signal once we're out there.

Bring plenty of water, comfortable hiking boots, snacks, sunscreen, and layers. October mornings can be chilly, but temperatures may warm up considerably once we get moving.

This isn't going to be a race. We'll take our time, explore the formations, enjoy the views, and have some fun along the way.

It's been far too long since Making Strides visited this beautiful area, and I'm looking forward to getting back out there.

See you on the trails!
