This is part one of a two-day hike along the best, most well-preserved sections of Hadrian's Wall from Greenhead to Housesteads. Join for one day or both, it's up to you!
For convenience, both walks start and end at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre.
See below for accommodation details if you're planning on staying over.
The Route
On this first hike we'll head east through Haltwhistle to admire the "Centre of Britain" memorial before heading onto the Roman Army Museum in Greenhead.
After lunch is when we start the main event: following along a major stretch of Hadrian's Wall, the 1,900 year old UNESCO World Heritage Site—passing Walltown Crags, Winshields Crags (the highest point on the wall), Cawfields Quarry and many a milecastle—all the way back to Steel Rig and Once Brewed.
Fun fact: this section of Hadrian's Wall is actually part of the Pennine Way.
After the hike we'll head to the Twice Brewed pub in Once Brewed for a drink or two.
Meeting point
9:45am at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre.
Parking
There's plenty of parking at The Still and it's not too pricey.
Dogs
Well behaved dogs are welcome on the walk and in the pub afterwards.
What to bring
Please bring a packed lunch, water and appropriate clothing/footwear for the weather and terrain.
Accommodation
I'll leave it up to you to book your own accommodation, but please shout up if you like a hand finding somewhere.
There's a YHA right there at the start point, plus a few guest houses near Once Brewed.
Haltwhistle is only 5 minutes drive away and Carlisle is only 35 minutes drive away. Both have plenty of reasonably priced places to stay.
There's a couple of campsites nearby too.
