Details

This is part two of a two-day hike along the best, most well-preserved sections of Hadrian's Wall from Greenhead to Housesteads. Join for one day or both, it's up to you!

For convenience, both walks start and end at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre.

See below for accommodation details if you're planning on staying over.

The Route

This second walk takes us west out to see the fascinating ruins of Vindolanda, the historic Roman settlement. From there we'll head over Barcombe Hill to the Thorngraften Common trig point for views over to the Wall.

Once we reach King's Hill we'll start our second and final trek along Hadrian's Wall, passing the Housesteads Roman fort, Graig Wood, Highshield Crags, Crag Lough and the famous Sycamore(less) Gap.

After the hike we'll head to the Twice Brewed pub in Once Brewed for another Sycamore Gap.

Meeting point

9:45am at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre.

Parking

There's plenty of parking at The Still and it's not too pricey.

Dogs

Well behaved dogs are welcome on the walk and in the pub afterwards.

What to bring

Please bring a packed lunch, water and appropriate clothing/footwear for the weather and terrain.

Accommodation

I'll leave it up to you to book your own accommodation, but shout up if you like a hand finding somewhere.

There's a YHA right there at the start point, plus a few guest houses near Once Brewed.

Haltwhistle is only 5 minutes drive away and Carlisle is only 35 minutes drive away. Both have plenty of reasonably priced places to stay.

There's a couple of campsites nearby too.
