✨💫Perseid Meteor Shower Watch - OMSI Party at Rooster Rock💫✨

Note: This is a public event that will be busy. It may be difficult to find the party when you arrive.

OMSI's free Star Party falls on Perseid peak night.
OMSI, Rose City Astronomers, and Oregon Parks & Recreation will have telescopes set up for attendees to use — planets, the moon, stars, and whatever else is up. Beginners through experts, all ages.

Conditions: August 12 is a new moon. No moonlight to wash out faint meteors — about as good as Perseid viewing gets.
Important: OMSI runs this at two parks the same night — L.L. Stub Stewart and Rooster Rock. This meetup is at Rooster Rock State Park. Don't drive west.

When: Wednesday, August 12, from 8 pm until OMSI's event ends. OMSI's page is inconsistent about that time — the event listing says midnight, the parking FAQ says 11:30 pm. Plan for either. I'll be there until it wraps.

Where: Rooster Rock State Park, Corbett, OR 97019. Take I-84 east to exit 25, about 22 miles east of Portland. There's a large parking lot.

Cost: The event is free. Parking is $10 per vehicle. Buy a day-use pass at the park entrance booth, or online in advance.
Sunset is 8:24 pm. OMSI asks that you arrive before sunset. Arriving in daylight also means finding the group, parking, and setting up without needing a light.

Finding the group: The exact spot in the park isn't known yet. It will be posted in the comments on this event by 8:00 pm — check the comments before leaving your car.
Look for red glowstick bracelets. There will be some to hand out; take one and wear it, and that's how you'll spot everyone else.

Comments on this event are monitored until 10 pm. After that, look for the red bracelets.

Bring a blanket to lie on or a camp chair. You'll be looking straight up for hours; standing gets old fast.
Also worth bringing (OMSI's list): warm layers, snacks, water, bug repellent, and a flashlight or phone light covered in red electrical tape. Personal telescopes and binoculars are welcome.

Dark-sky etiquette — please read this: Serious astronomers will be observing and photographing. Arrive before dark if you can. Kill your headlights the moment you park. Park so your headlights aren't pointed at the observing areas. One burst of white light wrecks everyone's dark-adapted vision and ruins long exposures.

• Pets welcome on a 6-foot leash. Clean up after them.
• No camping at Rooster Rock.
• OMSI says each park has nearby ADA-accessible parking. (The paved-path details on OMSI's page apply to Stub Stewart; nothing is stated about paths at Rooster Rock.)
• Weather: OMSI may cancel — they ask visitors to check omsi.edu/events/omsi-star-party/ on the day of the event. This meetup happens either way. If OMSI cancels, there will be no telescopes and no OMSI staff, but the bracelets and the sky will still be there.
