Dismantling Social Injustice: Unpacking Anti-Asian Racism

In the past year, anti-Asian attacks have spiked 150%. This startling surge in violence reminds us that the fight for racial justice is far from over. Join us at this month’s installment of Meetup Live’s Dismantling Social Injustice series for a discussion of anti-Asian sentiment in the United States.

Nam Giang of the National Organization of Asians and Pacific Islanders Ending Sexual Violence (NAPIESV) and Jennifer Wang of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF), will join a discussion on the history of anti-Asian racism in America. They’ll break down topics like the model minority myth, gender expectations and the hypersexualization of Asian women, and other harmful stereotypes that persist in the United States. They will also discuss steps we can take to support the AAPI community, as members and allies. Plus, stick around for a Q&A session.

About Baonam ‘Nam’ Giang:
Baonam ‘Nam’ Giang (he/him) is the Training and Technical Assistance Manager at the National Organization of Asians and Pacific Islanders Ending Sexual Violence (NAPIESV). In this role, he supports community based organizations and governmental organizations in enhancing their services for victims of sexual violence from the Asian and Pacific Islander communities in the U.S. and U.S Pacific Territories. He was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is a son of Vietnamese “Boat People”. He currently resides in the DMV area with his wife and is the proud father to a newborn baby girl. He holds a B.A. in Criminology and a Master of Public Administration from the University of New Mexico.

About Jennifer Wang:
Jennifer Wang (she/her) is the Deputy Director of Programs at the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum, the only multi-issue, progressive, community organizing and policy advocacy organization for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) women and girls in the U.S. She has degrees in psychology and women's studies from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law.
