Booked and Becoming: A Creative Embodied Bookclub
Details
Good books. Real Conversation. Creative expression.
And an exploration of our becoming.
Through the stories we read, we explore the lives of characters and the ways their experiences reflect, challenge, and illuminate our own. We'll get into the plot twists, complicated relationships, messy decisions, and moments that make us say, “Girl, I know exactly what you mean.”
We'll explore the stories we've inherited, the stories we've lived, and the stories we're still writing. Then we'll take the conversation beyond the pages through art-making, creative play, and embodied expression. No artistic experience needed--just curiosity and a willingness to explore.
Behind the Mask: Identity, Revelation, and Protection
Our First Read: The Revelation of Dionne Daphne by Mara Brock Akil
Some stories entertain us. Others invite us to confront the things we carry, the truths we keep, and the ways our experiences shape who we become.
For our first gathering, we'll explore The Revelation of Dionne Daphne, a powerful story that invites conversations about identity, relationships, secrets, survival, and the complexities of confronting one's past.
Through thoughtful conversation, we'll reflect on Dionne's experiences and the ways her story may resonate with our own narratives. We'll consider the roles we play, the ways we protect ourselves, and what it means to discover new truths about who we are.
Then we'll move beyond the pages into a mixed media creative mask-making experience. Using collage, paint, fabric, adhesive gems, and other embellishments, we'll explore the different layers of identity, what we choose to reveal, what we protect, and the ways our understanding of ourselves continues to shift, change, and deepen.
