What we’re about
This is a group is open to anyone, without discrimination, interested in exploring our great, local trails, lake & rivers. Whether you ride a bike, hike, or paddle, you are welcome to join our meetup group & participate in events. All skills levels are welcome. We started this group to meetup with other outdoor enthusiasts and learn of new places to explore, together. Most members live in the Ukiah valley area. Looking forward to exploring the county's outdoors with group members. Any group member who becomes an event organizer can post outdoor activities to invite others. Members are welcome to request outdoor events.

Walking for Exercise
Lake Mendocino South Ramp, Ukiah, CA, USThis meetup is full of hikers who enjoy staying in good shape by spending time outdoors. Come join us.
We begin by walking into the southern sun, so bring a hat to keep the sun out of your eyes.
Walking across Coyote Valley Dam and farther into the oak forest, we cover a minimum of 2 miles and a maximum of 4 miles. Most people walk at about 2½ mph. About halfway through, there is one hill that rises about 300 feet over roughly a quarter mile.
Bring water that’s easily accessible in a fanny pack, sling, or backpack. Dress in layers. Between the wind on the dam (¾ mile across), the winter sun, and the cool forest, temperatures can vary. Hiking poles are recommended.
We’ve had anywhere from 2 to 12 people join us, and all are welcome. We like walking on the dam because we can chat four or five abreast, then transition to a single-track trail for quieter walking.
We usually start walking at the time listed. When you sign up, we know to watch out for you. The past 10 years have provided wonderful accountability for staying active!
Here’s my favorite recorded “lollipop loop” at the south end of Lake Mendocino from AllTrails.

Book Study Stroll - Is A River Alive? by Robert Macfarlane
Low Gap Regional Park, 1167 Low Gap Road, Ukiah, CA, USWeek 5: Is a River Alive? by Robert Macfarlane was recommended reading by an organization that I follow: "POST Canoe Club, boaters who paddle Northern California Rivers (mostly) in canoes but also in any craft that can be human powered on moving water." and based in Berkeley, CA.
The link to the book is here: Is a River Alive?. It's a New York Times Bestseller. 300 pages, 3 distinct sections in the book. I would like to plan for six weeks of sharing. Part One is "The river of the cedars (Ecuador)", Part two is "Ghosts, Monsters and Angels (India)" and Park three is "the Living River" (Nitassinan/Canada).
The Galley Book Store in Mendocino, Mendocino Book Company (707 468-5940) in Ukiah and The Book Juggler in Willits are stores, that can order this book for you.

About our walking - We typically have walked 2 miles and taken stops to observe nature. We have this book to share about as we walk. We have walked up to four miles. We always leave an "out", if necessary.
If it rains, bring a rain jacket, umbrella, and be prepared for slippery trails.
Favorite places to walk that we could explore as part of the book study stroll. Please comment on your own favorite creekside or riverside walks. Mine are:
1. Low Gap - Orr Creek
2. West Side Ukiah - Standley Street - Gibson Creek
3. Masonite road, (with a permit) on weekends - Ackerman Creek
4. Mendocino - the haul road up Big River or Montgomery woods which is a tributary to Big River.
5. Cloverdale - Riverside park.
6. End of Gobbi - Skate park, by the Russian River.
P.S. Thank you everyone who has participated so far in the most interesting discussions on our book study strolls. From "Entangled Life" to "The California Naturalist", to the "Oak Woodlands", I have learned so much about our outdoors at Low Gap Park!
