An affair is often spoken about in scandalous whispers or moral outrage. Yet behind it lies a deep human story of complicated choices. Affairs come in different forms. Some are physical. Others are emotional. Nevertheless, their discovery often results in a seismic shattering of trust.

Research in Malaysia reflects the weight of this issue. Legal scholars have described marital infidelity as an increasing threat to marital stability and family wellbeing, noting its contribution to rising divorce rates and questioning whether existing frameworks sufficiently address its social impact. While infidelity is not treated as a criminal offence, its repercussions ripple through spouses, children and communities [1].

Public perception remains strong. Surveys by Ipsos show that Malaysians rank extramarital affairs among the most socially unacceptable behaviours, reflecting a deeply held expectation of trust and fidelity within committed relationships. Despite changing cultural norms, betrayal of trust continues to carry significant moral and social consequences [2].

At the same time, psychological research among married Malaysians reveals that intention toward infidelity is closely linked to relationship satisfaction. Higher emotional and sexual satisfaction are associated with lower likelihood of seeking connection outside the relationship. This suggests that affairs rarely exist in isolation. They often emerge from relational dissatisfaction, emotional disconnection or unmet needs [3].

This is not a debate.
Not a blame session.
Not a space to justify harm.

It is a space for respectful exchange, diverse perspectives and deeper understanding of the fragile architecture of trust between partners.

A Dialogue is a space where open and honest conversations between Men and Women continue to flourish.
