Lucky Peak Power Plant Tour / Dam History Presentation

Details

Join us for this educational 1-hour tour of the Hydroelectric Power Plant at the Lucky Peak Dam. At peak operations, 101 megawatts are generated – enough power for about 100,000 homes.

Tours start in the Visitor Center, which has information about the history and pictures taken during the construction of the power plant. A representative from the Army Corps of Engineers will offer a short presentation on the dam history before our tour starts. The tour then continues into the power plant itself. The powerhouse is noisy, dark and damp. Plan for many stairs (although, an elevator is available, if needed due to disability).

Appropriate clothing and footwear is required. Cell service is very limited in this area.

CARPOOLING IS ENCOURAGED

DIRECTIONS:
From Boise, take I-84 East (toward Mountain Home) to Exit 57, Idaho Hwy-21/Gowen Road and turn left onto Gowen Rd/Idaho
Hwy 21 toward Idaho City. Continue to follow ID-21 towards Idaho City approximately 5.5 miles to Discovery Park (just before Lucky Peak Dam). Turn right just past the Discovery Park entrance onto the SANDY POINT ROAD. Turn right again at the first access road (by the LUCKY PEAK POWER PLANT sign) and follow to the security gate. When you get to the security gate, press the call button on the keypad on the right side of the gate to request access (identify yourself and let the Operator know you are here for a tour). Once the security gate is open, follow the road to the parking lot on your right just outside the compound gate. A Lucky Peak employee will meet you at the parking lot and escort you into the compound.

RULES:

  • Tour groups are not permitted in the Control Room (however, it can be viewed through a window).
  • Firearms and weapons of any kind are not permitted on Lucky Peak Power Plant property.
  • Bags and backpacks are not permitted on the property during tours without prior permission and are subject to search.
  • Photographs and video recordings are not permitted at any time without prior permission from Lucky Peak staff.
  • Access permission may be revoked at any time by Lucky Peak staff.

NOTE: Visitor and employee safety is of primary concern at Lucky Peak and tours may be terminated at any time. If tour participants create a safety concern or an emergency occurs, the tour will end immediately.
