With the season now upon us, let’s check out this classic Christmas comedy!
Insurance worker C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) lends his Upper West Side apartment to company bosses to use for extramarital affairs. When his manager Mr. Sheldrake begins using Baxter's apartment in exchange for promoting him, Baxter is disappointed to learn that Sheldrake's mistress is Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the elevator girl at work whom Baxter is interested in himself.
I watched this for the first time last year and it instantly became a favourite.
Billy Wilder’s punchy script deftly explores the duality of the season, for even in the thick of dispair and loneliness, there’s still a sparkle of hope for something special.
Let’s meet outside the Perfecto Cafe (605 Davie Street) at 7:00pm for a catch up/introductions over a coffee, then we can head to the VIFF theatre around 7:30pm to line up ready for the 7:45 showing :v).
