Details

Metropolitan Walkers is part of the Ramblers, Britain's walking charity. All welcome for 3 'taster' walks, after which please join the Ramblers - info on the Met Walkers website

This hilly walk takes in much of the dramatic Hampshire landscape known to both pioneering ecologist Gilbert White and beloved author Jane Austen. After scaling the Shoulder of Mutton Hill and Noar Hill, we arrive in White's Selborne village for lunch. Refreshed, we'll then brave the famous Zig-Zag path, before passing by Jane Austen's House en-route into Alton. (570m total ascent). Please bring a packed lunch. Pub/café stop at lunchtime (for drinks only), with a tap room at the end.

Terrain: Fields, Woods, Tracks, Country Lanes

Travel: Take 9:00 from London Waterloo (9:25 Woking), arr. Petersfield 10:04.

Please note this train does NOT call at Clapham Junction. As an alternative, take 8:57 from Clapham Junction, to join the Petersfield train at Woking (arr. 9:15, dep. 9:25).

Buy return to Petersfield. May require an additional single from Alton to Woking for the return leg of the journey.

Grading: Moderate.
For an explanation of the gradings, please see the FAQ - please consider both the length and grade when choosing a walk.

Finish point: Alton station
