What we’re about
Like me, you're in your late 40s. Your younger self was in decent shape and you participated in regular fitness activity.
Today, you feel puffed just bringing the shopping in from the car. You know you need to get in better shape but you lack motivation. The stresses of life are overwhelming.
Sound familiar?
Life has a way of giving us wake-up calls about our health. Mine came recently during a medical fitness test when I had to stop midway through a simple step-up exercise because my heart rate had risen too high. At 46, having worked a desk job for the last 20 years or so and managing high cholesterol, this was my moment of truth.
Come and join me for a stroll in the park and maybe a coffee afterwards.
Questions you may ask.
What to expect?
This is not intended as an outdoor fitness session and you will certainly not be drilled. It is very casual. We just walk, have a chat if you like and perhaps grab a coffee afterwards. Feel free to have a break at any time and if you've had enough, just drop out.
What happens if I am running late?
Sure, this happens to us all. The group always starts on time as we only have an hour and most people have to get back to their day to day. Please try and catch up if you can or just simply enjoy the scenery.
Where do the walks take place?
In the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. To date, our walks have been around Blackburn, Box Hill, Templestowe and Doncaster. In future, we may travel further afield.
How many people might there be?
There is usually an average of 10 people at the walks.
What if it rains?
If it's forecast for terrible weather I will give you a heads-up and we may cancel or reschedule. Similarly, if its too hot we can make the same calls.
What to bring?
Water, coffee in a Keep Cup, comfortable shoes for walking in. At some locations the terrain can be uneven, gravelly and undulating.
Why did you start this group?
17 years ago I had just started a personal training business. I was reasonably fit and had a regular exercise routine. Age 30, I was told that I had cancer. Long story short, the cancer was successfully removed and I began my recovery process. During this time I lost my motivation for fitness, closed my business, took a desk job and my fitness went slowly downhill. Last year I was advised by my doctor that I had high cholesterol and they put me on the dreaded pills. At 46, something had to change. I realised the importance of developing strength and balance going into older age and the easiest way to start is to do what comes most naturally, walking.
If you have any other questions just reach out. Thanks!
