About us

Miles in Motion is a community for people who want to walk, hike, explore, and connect through meaningful journeys.

Our first journey is the Chicago Outerbelt, a roughly 210 mile loop connecting forest preserves, regional trails, park paths, city neighborhoods, and the Chicago lakefront. Conceived by Jay Readey and developed through the Outerbelt Alliance, the route was first completed as a thru-hike in 2018.

We will complete the Outerbelt in 38 segments of approximately five to six miles through May 2027. Each walk is limited to six participants, with a waitlist available when an event fills. Join me for one segment, several, or as many as you would like.

Rather than following the loop in geographic order, we will schedule segments seasonally so we can experience each area when conditions are most favorable. A concise, printable journey plan will show the complete series, anticipated schedule, and our progress along the way.

Preliminary seasonal sequence of planned segments.

There is no fixed team and no attendance requirement. People may join along the way, familiar faces may return, and on weekends when no one joins, the journey will continue as a solo walk. Every segment remains part of the same unfolding story.

Future journeys may take us throughout Chicagoland, along the trails and lakeshore of West Michigan, and wherever there is something worth exploring on foot.

This group is about more than accumulating miles. It is about movement, discovery, conversation, connection, and being fully present for the places and people we encounter along the way.
