Cinematography Series: THE MASTER (Lens Language)

Details
We've looked at light and the frame, now let's move on to the camera. We'll start with The Master (2012) by PT Anderson (who has a new movie coming out in September!), shot by Mihai Malaimare, Jr. on 70mm. It's sort of the opposite of Citizen Kane, with extreme shallow depth of field throughout.
For the next several weeks, we’re going to focus on one particular aspect of filmmaking to guide our discussions: cinematography. Cinematography is a vast and maybe little understood part of moviemaking. Each meetup we will examine a different aspect of cinematography—composition, lensing, lighting, color, camera movement, special tricks and effects. By the end we will see movies as we never have before, with a deeper, more nuanced understanding and appreciation.
Most of these movies will be available on any streaming service, or as always you can find a (free) link here:

We will meet on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 8PM, at LEANING TOWER OF PIZZA at 24th Street and Lyndale, same as always. See you there!
