About us
We have a new name for this group, to better reflect what it's about.
Monopoly power is a major cause of economic problems. In this Meetup group, we've been looking at the role of monopoly power in causing such problems as poverty, inequality, unaffordable housing, unaffordable medical care, shortages of job choices, etc.
.
In recent years, there has been the rise of a new anti-monopoly movement. That includes two new anti-monopoly institutes, and an annual Anti-Monopoly Summit. Monopolies and cartels had gotten much worse over the last forty years, ever since the federal government had virtually stopped applying anti-monopoly policies in the early 1980s.
So, there is a new anti-monopoly movement to address the problem, instead of only trying to treat the symptoms.
A constitutional democracy can only be sustained if the economy is not dominated by monopolies and cartels, which then distort the political system.
.
(An historical note about anti-monopoly: many people have not heard that the famous Monopoly game originally had a second set of rules, for playing anti-monopoly. The creator of the game, Elizabeth Magie, was part of the anti-monopoly movement.)
Most of our members tend to be Democrats or Independents. Those who participate understand that civil liberties are also needed (the Bill of Rights, freedom of religion, the rule of law, due process, separation of powers, etc.) This Meetup group is a project of the Democratic Freedom Caucus of Pennsylvania (DFC-PA), which is for Civil Liberties and is Anti-Monopoly.
We will be meeting by online video mostly, but some of us in south-central Pennsylvania (York-Harrisburg-Lancaster) might meet in person sometimes, and some might meet in person in other parts of the state. We're networking with others who address this issue, including seeking legislation and candidates for office.
.
We meet the second Wednesday evening of each month. The link will be sent that day to everyone who RSVPd. If you don't see the link in your inbox by about 6:00 pm, contact the organizer directly through this link: https://www.meetup.com/society-and-social-progress-pa/members/?op=leaders
