Walter Browne Open. The next tournament will occur Saturday June 8 at Salinas Valley Community Church. Player registration opens at 9:15 and closes at 10am sharp. This is a 1-day tournament with 3 rounds starting at 10:30, 1PM, and 3:30.
The USCF-rated portion of the tournament will have a Champions section of 8 seasoned players, including Anshu Patil and Michael Wang who qualify with perfect scores in the May 11 Challengers section. The Walter Browne Open includes a Challengers section of 15-25 players. Entry is open to US Chess Federation members of all ages and abilities. USCF membership must be current on the morning of the tournament. Join or renew at https://new.uschess.org/join-us-chess .
The Walter Browne Open will also have a non-rated Club section where USCF membership is not required. Round times and rules are the same as those of the rated Sections. This section is offered for players who prefer not to join USCF or who are not comfortable with the added pressure of rated games. It also serves as a gateway event for new players interested in experiencing the drama of a chess tournament with no memberships or commitments.
Salinas Valley Chess Club will sponsor an awards ceremony to occur upon completion of the final game, around 5:30pm. A trophy will be awarded to the 1st-place finisher in each section, and medals will be awarded to runners up. Ties for 1st place will be broken with a playoff blitz match. Trophies will be awarded to the top scholastic finishers, K-12. Results automatically count toward Days & Knights Ladder standings for Monterey County residents.
There is a $5 entry fee for all sections, which is waived for K-12 students and CSUMB students. Chess boards and pieces are provided. Game clocks are provided with 30 minutes allocated to each player, plus a 30s increment added with each move, i.e., G/30 +30. Tournaments occur monthly in lieu of our Days & Knights weekly Saturday-afternoon gathering on Broadway Avenue in Seaside. Spectators welcome. The tournament flyer is attached to this email newsletter.
