What we’re about

The Moore Street School Foundation would like to welcome and thank you for taking a few moments to experience the restoration journey of Moore Street School.  The Moore Street School Foundation, a 501 C 3 organization, started March 2021 with the mission to rehab and preserve Moore Street School that was built in 1887.

This sixteen-classroom, two-story brick school was built in 1887 by City engineer Lt. Col. W. E. Cutshaw to provided the educational needs for African-American children of Richmond and is said to be the only one retaining much of the original "interior and exterior character," and has been described as one of the best examples of this period still publicly owned.

Moore Street School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and on the Virginia Landmarks Register. Since the Moore Street School has been vacant and underutilized for over two decades, it is paramount that mitigation efforts be implemented to prevent further decay and physical deterioration.

The Mission of our foundation is as follows:

To rehabilitate, repurpose and preserve decaying Moore Street School into a performing arts training center for all ages as well as create an event and meeting place. Currently the foundation would like the performing arts training center to known as "The Jazz Center at Moore Street School."

The Moore Street School Foundation is hosting a jazz series as a means to raise fund to help with the restoration of 1887 built Moore Street School. Visit the link to see the line up of jazz artist.
