Folks, fancy a weekend of great hiking and apres hiking, well this trip might be what you are looking for!!
This will be two full days hiking, taking in Clare Island on Friday the 6th and Achill itself, on Saturday the 7th September.
Hike to Clare Island: Ferry from Achill Sound across to Clare Island Pier. Route: Pier - Holy Well - Promontory Fort - Maum - Ballytoohy - Cliffs - Knockmore (462m) - Signal Tower - Cliffs - Loughanaphuca - Craigmore - Holywell - Pier. Distance; 20.2kms, Ascent 880M.
The Achill hike will commence from Dooagh Strand and head west up to Lough Acorrymore, across to Keem Beach, follow the cliffs around to the summit of Croaghaun. We will then head over to the Signal Tower and endeavour to summit Slievemore, the other main peak on the island. If you don't feel energetic enough to summit Slievemore, you can always head back down to the famine village and pick up the track back to Dooagh strand. The full distance for this hike is approximately 25km with an ascent of 1600m, however as the Achill hike is a looped hike, there are various exit points en route and we can temper the hike based on the conditions of the day and hikers expectations.
Accommodation is the responsibility of the attendee, however I would strongly recommend locating between Achill Sound and Dooagh Strand for proximity to starting points.
People wishing to attend must answer the health and safety question attached.
