NOTE1
skating can be dangerous! So if you aren't very coordinated or balanced in general, it might be recommended you skip this event
SAFETY
Don't be stiff while skating, instead I recommend always having your knees bent a bit, don't lock your knees/legs! This will help you with balance. I can help teach you the gist of how to move forward in skating. Recommend wearing thick or double pair of socks for padding, to help make skating more comfy as well
And there are tips for falling safely, here's a quick general guide:
you want to protect your vulnerable parts (like wrists and head) and distribute the impact over larger part of your body to reduce the overall impact force (ie landing on your side, a large area, versus landing on a small point like you hand/wrist (bad!)). Aim to land on more padded/cushy/ areas of your body. Try to relax and not stiffen when falling. Never try to catch yourself with straight arms or stiff legs. Instead, bend, roll, and fall on bigger muscle groups
Be careful not to lock your elbows or just stick your arm out straight/stiff to land on it, that could cause a break. Don't randomly flail your arms around, try to bend your knees and get lower to the ground if you need more balance or feel you might fall. So if you fall, aim to land on your butt, side, forearms (between elbow and wrist), thigh, knees, not your outstretched palms. Can practice falling on soft grass, carpet, or mats to get some muscle memory.
For Newcomers: “Fall Like a Rock”
Think “curl in” rather than “reach out.”
Practice falling backward from a low squat (you get here by first bending your knees when you think you might be falling to try to get low to ground) onto a padded surface: Tuck chin, Cross arms or hug chest, Sit down and roll slightly onto your upper back
NOTE2:
if you're new, I know it can be hard to find the group, and it also can be hard for me to find/recognize you as well. To try to help, I'll be wearing a red wristband, and you can ask people "are you part of the meetup"
