American Sign Language (ASL) - Practice Social
Details
Trying something new this time around.
There's another group that plans to meet at Chandler Mall this Fri from 5-8pm in the food court (open to ASL students of all levels, hard of hearing, deaf, friends of the community, interpreters, teachers, etc). For this month's ASL event, we will check them out for part of the time, and I'll extend an invite for anyone else who'd like to join Jess and I in it.
Try to practice using your ASL, gestures, and face expressions to get your point across. It may be more challenging, but, a good way to learn and help cement it in your brain (immersion and practice, rather than relying on verbal cues).
We can start by meeting at ~5:45pm at Round 1, there are a bunch of tables by the bowling alley, and shouldn't have any issue finding seating there. We can quickly refresh on the basics, alphabet, how to get ppl's attention, and other etiquette, how to ask "how do you say....", or "what does that mean?", or "again/repeat, slow, please", "what does (sign) mean?", "hi, my name ...", "nice to meet you", etc.
From about ~6:15pm onward, we can go to meet the other group at the food court, And linger there till ~7:30p. If ppl would like a recap session afterward, to chat, see how things went, we can can regroup on the side, and discuss or answer any questions on how ppl's experience went.
I went once last month, Jess has checked it out 2x or more. Ppl here are nice and patient. They are open to helping fingerspell and show you the signs, there were a good number of ppl there that were deaf, so you may not be able to rely/ask them questions verbally, outside of signing and fingerspelling. I can help as needed.
Who's this for?
anyone interested in learning sign, learning new languages, or getting a more pure ASL experience then what we usually do
It would probably help if you can at least do and know the abc's at a fair pace, but, I will bring a stack of the abc's in ASL printed out, so feel free to use that as a reference sheet if desired. I'd say come open to learning, and trying, being patient with yourself, and it should be a good learning experience. I encourage y'all to come by, as it'll be easier this time with Jess and I and potential peers around, so if needed, just pull us aside as needed
hope to see ya there!
