Jon (Domhnall Gleeson), an aspiring musician, finds himself joining a unique group lead by Michael Fassbender's eccentric Frank. The film charts the band's move to Ireland to record an album and their subsequent attempts to get in to the South By Southwest music festival. It also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal as Frank's theremin-playing sidekick and Scoot McNairy as the band's manager, with the songs recorded as part of their on-set performances rather than in a studio.
Frank is clearly inspired by Mancunian comic creation Frank Sidebottom, though the story it tells isn't strictly his. Transporting him out of Manchester and into the US the movie also relies less on his life story and more on the lives of Captain Beefheart and Daniel Johnston among others.
Generally well-received, Frank apparently has a style all of it's own. And any movie featuring a theremin has got to be worth a look, right?
Those who have RSVP'd will receive full details of the meet the night before.
Update: There's only a few central venues that have scheduled the movie so far and of those the Barbican is the cheapest by a couple of pounds so I've opted for there. You can book your tickets here (https://www.barbican.org.uk/eticketing/performancelist.asp?shoID=37579,37580) :)
