The details are all set for our Annual Holiday Event and I am so excited!

ABOUT THE EVENT:
At our annual event we start off by seeing a movie that's only showing somewhere in Manhattan - this year at Lincoln Center! After the movie we head to a great restaurant where we discuss the movie and have an overall fun time hanging out. This year we'll be at China River. We will also be celebrating the wedding of Eugenie and Joe who will be back from their honeymoon and over their jet lag by then!
After dinner, we walk over to Rockefeller Center to see the tree, the holiday lights (the light show is back at Saks!) and visit FAO Schwarz if it is open -where we jump on the piano from Big! It's a pretty great night.
Please note that everyone is responsible for their own transportation. In the past folks have made arrangements to travel together. It all seems to work out:)
THEATER/SHOWTIME:
We'll be seeing the 3:15pm showing of Resurrection at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Get tickets here: https://www.filmlinc.org/films/resurrection/

DINNER DISCUSSION:
You know I love to theme the dinner and the movie where possible. I'm excited that we can eat at the well reviewed, convenient and reasonably priced China River at 258 44th Street. Our reservation is at 6:30. https://www.nychinariver.com/

ABOUT THE FILM:
SYNOPSIS:
Humanity has given up dreaming to secure longevity; dreaming is taboo and rare. An outcast (played by Jackson Yee) still dreams — and in those dreams, entire alternate worlds, histories, and atmospheres unfold.
A woman (played by Shu Qi) becomes aware of his ability and decides to enter his dream-world. She becomes his companion on a journey through layered dreamscapes that revisit decades of Chinese history and cinematic styles. The film is divided into multiple chapters — each one shifting in tone, era, and cinematic language: silent-film nostalgia, noir, wartime thriller, even vampire-tinged romance — reflecting different “senses” of human experience and inviting viewers to traverse time, memory and myth. In Chinese with English subtitles. Runtime: 160 minutes.

If you enjoy films that challenge reality — and reward attention with stunning visuals — this is one you need to witness on the big screen.I'm especially excited about this movie because it is an homage to film - and historical filmmakers. With an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reviewers frame it as a “love letter to cinema.”
From acclaimed Chinese director Bi Gan (Kaili Blues, Long Day’s Journey Into Night) comes Resurrection, a hypnotic, visually stunning exploration of memory, dreams, and identity. Bi Gan has become known as one of cinema’s boldest visionaries — and Resurrection pushes his surreal, poetic filmmaking even further.
Resurrection is:

  • A film you can’t see anywhere else — rare screenings only
  • A breathtaking audiovisual experience filled with long takes, dream logic, and atmospheric beauty
  • Perfect for fans of arthouse, experimental, and boundary-pushing cinema
  • A tribute to the history of cinema — the film references different genres and eras, combining elements of noir, horror, silent film, sci-fi, and surrealism.
  • Winner of the Palm d'Or Director award at Cannes.

Critics Consensus on Rotten Tomatoes — “Pushing against the boundaries of storytelling with overwhelming style, Bi Gan’s Resurrection is equal parts inscrutable and invigoratingly awake to the endless possibilities of cinema. And the last quote - and one of my favorites, "some critics admit the narrative can feel elusive or overwhelming, but for those open to its rhythm, Resurrection becomes a powerful, almost spiritual experience."
Resurrection promises to be an unforgettable ride. It will make for a great discussion!

If you are new to the group – welcome! Please be aware of the following:

OUR NO SHOW POLICY:
• If you RSVP and your plans then change, we ask that you notify us and change your RSVP as soon as possible - definitely before the start of the event. It's unfair for the group to wait around after the film for people who do not show up. And it fouls up reservations made at the restaurants we visit. NO SHOWS WILL NOW BE WARNED ONCE AND REMOVED FROM THE GROUP AFTER THE SECOND OCCURRENCE. We keep a list of no-shows - please change your RSVP prior to the start of the event so you don't end up on it! Thank you for your consideration.
WAIVER, RELEASE, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISKS
• This is a show-up at your own risk event. This meetup group does not take any responsibility for any health risks that might happen during this event. When you RSVP you are accepting these terms upon yourself and your guests (if any). I hereby waive, release, and discharge the Meetup Group and its officers, leaders, volunteers, employees, organizers, sponsors, members, and participants from any claims for personal injury, property damage, or death resulting from my participation in any of this group’s events. My RSVP and/or participation in this event is my signature on this waiver.
