"Grave Of The Fireflies" (with post-film Q & A)

Details

The Music Box is presenting a celebration of the legendary animation Studio Ghibli's 40th anniversary with a selection of their films, perhaps none as distinctive as "Grave of the Fireflies". Don't let the captivating animation and lovable main two character mislead you - this tale of a Japanese teenager and his younger sister trying to survive in the wake of World War 2 is one of the most emotionally devastating movies ever made, animation or not. Over the course of their journey, there's beauty and horror, whimsy and despair - it's a tour-de-force of movie expression on how the damage effects a country's population long after a wartime conflict has concluded.

After the movie there will be a post-film lecture and Q&A in the theater about the movie and its historical context of post-war Japan, hosted by Professor Yuki Miyamoto (DePaul University), Professor Savneer K. Talwar (SAIC) and Saira Chambers. Following that we'll head to the Coalfire Pizzeria just south on 3707 N. Southport to talk what we thought about the movie and why it's an outlier to the majority of Ghilbli animation. Tickets are $15 and you can pick them up and find more information on the movie at: https://musicboxtheatre.com/films-and-events/grave-of-the-fireflies
