"Él" from Buñuel
Details
Between the expressly surreal works of the 1930's like "L'Age d'Or" and his international breakthroughs of "Viridiana" and "The Exterminating Angel", Spanish / Mexican director Luis Buñuel made a series of dramas culminating in "Él" in 1953. It's described by the folks at Criterion as, "an expressionistically stylized nightmare and raw indictment of religious and social hypocrisy [...] it stands as the director’s greatest excursion into melodrama, a vivid portrayal of society’s inability to restrain the irrational urges of the human psyche."
Afterwards we'll head to the nearby Coalfire Pizzeria on 3707 N. Southport to talk about the movie and how it fits with Buñuel's unique combination of dramatic and surrealistic touches. You can get tickets in advance ($14) by heading to this link: https://musicboxtheatre.com/films-and-events/el
