Synopsis:
With No Good Men, director, writer and actor Shahrbanoo Sadat shows a different, more authentic side of Afghanistan. A side portrayed with humour and romance. It was the opening film of the recent Berlinale film festival.
Afghanistan, 2021, shortly before the Taliban comes into power again. Naru, the only camerawoman at the most important television station in Kabul, is trying to keep custody of her three year old son. After leaving her adulterous husband, she – like most other Afghan women – is convinced that there are no more good men left in her country.
That’s why Naru is surprised when Qodrat, the most important journalist of Kabul TV, offers her a career opportunity. As they haphazardly travel through the city to report on the final days of freedom, sparks begin to fly and Naru starts doubting her conviction. Might there be a good man left after all?

Synopsis:

An epic and deeply human film about the beginnings of Palestinian emancipation—an underrepresented yet crucial chapter in world history. Director Annemarie Jacir (Wajib) may well have created the most ambitious Palestinian production ever: a cinematic achievement brought to life under extreme circumstances, in the midst of an ongoing war.
In 1936, the British Empire tightens its grip on Palestine. Yusuf is caught between his village and his job in Jerusalem, where Palestinian journalists are trying to document the truth as censorship and repression intensify. His friend Khalid becomes radicalized and joins the growing resistance, while others struggle to survive amid fear and hope. All sides converge at a decisive moment for the entire region, amid an anti-colonial uprising whilst Jewish refugees flee persecution in Europe.
As clashing ideals inevitably lead to armed conflict between Palestinian freedom fighters and brutal British officers, Palestine 36 shows the growing resistance of ordinary people in the struggle for autonomy and their very survival. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was selected as the Palestinian entry for the Oscars.

Synopsis:
Derived from Beyond Provenance, a transnational collaboration between art collective Indeks from Bandung and screening platform wysiwyg from The Hague, this interdisciplinary film program Can you hear the objects speak? by Asian Movie Night and wysiwyg, seeks to reclaim the living worlds of displaced heritage.
Rather than focusing solely on material significance—a logic that often mirrored colonial frameworks of preservation—the program foregrounds the emotional, cultural, spiritual, and communal values these objects hold for the communities from which they were taken, as a gateway to understanding the animist and relational cosmopraxis shared by many Indigenous nations in present-day Indonesia.
Through film, conversation, and performance, we will listen to the voices of ancestral beings held hostage in museums, mineral stones extracted for AI technology, as well as the ghostly presence in the streets of Amsterdam built by looted wealth. In doing so, it challenges the Western ontological impulse to turn living beings into static objects, and instead reawakens a sense of liveness, agency, and wisdom in the beings we connect with, thus learning different ways of relating—ways that may help us not only rethink restitution, but also reimagine worlds and futures beyond the crisis we are facing.

After the screening, there will be a panel talk with art historian and researcher Danielle Hofmans, filmmakers Hattie Wade and Kae Oktorina, and Ruben Verkuylen from wysiwyg, moderated by LI Yuchen.
The discussion will expand from the films we have watched into the overarching theme of colonial history, hidden narratives, displaced ways of living and restitution and justice, connecting to the recent Exhibition Bakudengar in Arnhem Museum and the research project Beyond Provenance.
