About us
Do you love to work with Excel? Or maybe you are just looking to learn what you need to do better at work or apply for a new job. In either case, this group is for you.
Because it is impossible for any of us to know everything about Excel, this group is meant to be a space for sharing what we know with each other. In each session, we bring a guest to tell us about their best tips, tricks, techniques, and thoughts about an Excel-related topic. We are very proud of the amazing content that we have delivered to our Group Members so far.
Registration as a member has no cost, and all the sessions are FREE.
We are running two different session series to address everyone's needs.
EXCEL ESSENTIALS: focusing on essential functions and features, fundamental core concepts for data analysis, and practical tips for everyday use.
This series will offer shorter sessions delivered by Excel Trainers, Power Users, and Experts to help you build your foundational Excel skills and become a stronger and more confident Excel user.
Presentation time: about 30 minutes
Total session duration: about 60 minutes
EXCEL EXPANDED: because Excel keeps evolving and expanding in so many directions and can integrate with so many different technologies, we will continue to invite the best experts in the world to share their knowledge and best tips with us, leading us to expand our Excel skills and understanding of what Excel can do.
These sessions will follow our usual format.
Presentation time: 45-60 minutes
Total session duration: about 90 minutes
Anyone can attend any of the sessions by clicking a link provided to those who register (RSVP Yes) for the session.
Sessions are currently happening online through Microsoft Teams. There is no need to install Microsoft Teams. You can use your browser on your computer or mobile device to join the session.
We would love to hear what you have been up to with Excel. What kind of problems do you solve with it? What kind of solutions do you build with it? What are your favourite techniques, features and tools? What is your advice about best practices for working with Excel?
If you want to learn more about using Excel to your maximum potential, this group is for you. Let's all get together to connect and learn from each other.

Building Your Own Data Types: Practical Techniques for Modern Excel
·OnlineOnlineSESSION DETAILS
Data types are particularly useful to organize and keep handy and updated “lookup” data. This becomes extremely powerful when applied to your own data!
In the past, we had to use VLOOKUP to link between workbooks. This method is not efficient, is prone to errors in many ways, and is completely outdated.
This session introduces how Data Types work in Excel and how they can make worksheets easier to build, read, and keep current. We begin with an overview of the built-in Data Types: Stocks, Currencies, and Geography, and how they add structured and easily refreshable information directly to the grid. The session then shows how to create custom Data Types using Power Query.
You will also see a demonstration of Data Types by Make Digital Solutions, an add-in for Excel designed and built by Jakob and available in the Microsoft Marketplace, which allows you to define and use Data Types based on your own data and share those easily with your team and organization.
Throughout the session, examples will show how Data Types behave in formulas, lookups, dynamic arrays, and reports. The session ends with an invitation to share real use cases to help guide future improvements.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jakob is passionate about helping people become more productive and achieve better results with spreadsheets. He is the founder and CEO of Make Digital Solutions ApS and a Principal Designer in the Excel team at Microsoft.

Excel Pranks and Protections - Harmless Shenanigan | David Ringstrom
·OnlineOnlineSESSION DETAILS
Think you know Excel? Think again. In this lighthearted—but sneakily educational—session, Excel author and trainer David H. Ringstrom, CPA (author of Microsoft 365 Excel For Dummies) shares a series of spreadsheet pranks that double as clever, real-world techniques for controlling behavior in workbooks.
You’ll learn how to:
- Modify the Normal cell style to make data “disappear” (until you know where to look)
- Override Excel’s default month fill pattern with a custom AutoFill list
- Swap column letters for numbers using R1C1 reference style—confusing at first, but useful in the right hands
- Create a hidden workbook window that launches automatically from Excel’s XLSTART folder
- And more—all easy to undo, and surprisingly useful in day-to-day Excel work
Each “prank” showcases an underused Excel feature that’s equally suited to streamlining templates, locking down structure, or simply raising eyebrows in the best way.
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, "What happened to my spreadsheet?"—this session will teach you both how to break things (gently) and how to fix them like a pro.
No code. No damage. Just good, clean spreadsheet mischief.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
David H. Ringstrom, CPA, has over 30 years of experience as a spreadsheet and accounting software consultant and speaker, having presented more than 2,500 live webinars. He has authored or co-authored eight books, including Microsoft 365 Excel For Dummies, Exploring Microsoft Excel’s Hidden Treasures, and QuickBooks Online For Dummies.
