What we’re about
Nanaimo Day Hikes is a club which provides opportunities (thanks to our volunteer hosts) for hiking and exploring parts of our natural and urban environment found in and around Nanaimo and the surrounding area on Vancouver Island.
We are not a technical group, but we are made up of individuals who are keen about being out of doors and willing to try many types and styles of hiking. The length of our hikes will vary ranging from 1 hour to 7-8 hours in length and the pace can also vary also with the hope of appealing to a broader range of people.
There is more to hiking than just the physical activity of hiking. With Nanaimo Day Hikes we hope it is an opportunity to explore, to experience, to create while in the company of others. To have a conversation, to share an experience, to view the world from a different perspective and to appreciate. If you wish to meet some like-minded hikers, then you might want to consider us as a route to achieve that.
Let's all enjoy the great outdoors together!
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- Rosewall Creek FallsRosewall Creek Provincial Park, Fanny Bay, BC
Meet at the Rosewall Creek Park parking lot at 10am,
Rosewall Creek Provincial Park is located approximately 3 km south of Fanny Bay.
- Take the Cook Creek interchange off of Highway 19
- Follow Cook Creek Rd down to Hwy 19A and turn left onto 19A
- Turn right off of Hwy 19A onto Berray Road
- The entrance sign for the Provincial Park will be on your left-hand side just as you turn onto Berray Road
Note, we hike quickly! We will follow the creek side trail for about 4km for a view of the falls and return on the same trail. The trail is fairly flat with only a few short inclines, but there are a lot of obstacles to go around and pass over, and a few creeks to cross over on man-made log bridges. There is a steep section near the falls. There may be some washouts on the trail that may require some bushwhacking to get around. We will keep a fast pace as trail conditions allow.
When we return, we will head down the road to the Rosewall Creek Hatchery, 8425 Berray Road to check out the River Never Sleeps Festival, (see poster)
Last year there was food for sale at very reasonable prices if anyone is hungry. CASH only I think.- If anyone is interested in carpooling, please message.

Join me by chasing some waterfalls, require at least 6 attendees please. The always MUDDY trail follows along Nile Creek which cascades thru a series of drops and pools of various sizes. The further you go upstream, the more spectacular the waterfalls. A rope section (bring gloves) assists you up a short/steep hill. To avoid going thru the MUDDY sections again, we'll take an old de-activated service road with steep cross ditches (will skirt around these, there may be some bush walking) out to the highway. Note: we'll cross 2 southbound & then 2 northbound lanes and continue along a trail above the highway for approx 15 minutes, merge onto the Donkey trail, before dropping back down to Nile Creek and returning to vehicles.
Expect muddy and slippery with varied conditions and unstable terrain (log crossings, stones, roots & some blowdown). Hiking boots/shoes with good tread required. Gaiters and poles recommended.
