Willow Creek Waterfall Hike
Details
DIFFICULTY: Strenuous.
DISTANCE: 6 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 800 feet
PACE: Since the terrain may be a bit tricky in places and the uphill portion will be a bit slower, we'll start at a more relaxed 30 min/mi pace and only go faster if everyone is comfortable with more speed. We'll also take a snack/picture break at the waterfall.
DOG FRIENDLY: No
WEATHER: Occidental, CA 10-Day Weather Forecast | Weather Underground - rain forecast will mean postponement due to muddy conditions on this route – I will update a couple of days before.
Join us for a trek to one of the tallest waterfalls in West County, in the beautiful Willow Creek area of Sonoma Coast State Park! With recent rains this is the perfect time to visit.
THE ROUTE: Starting from the Hunters Camp Trailhead we head down the Hunters Camp Trail, descending into a redwood forest. Then at the bottom of the canyon we head right to reach the falls. This is an almost entirely shaded route.
There are three challenges on this route. First off, it’s downhill all the way on the first half, and uphill on the return (although it’s a relatively moderate incline.) Second, it can get muddy in the days immediately following rain. Third, there is a creek crossing near the falls that can also be a bit tricky if the water is high. So poles and good boots will help.
