Join your hiking buds for a strenuous backpacking trip exploring the one of the best natural areas in Southeast Tennessee. The 3.5-mile trail descends steeply into the Walls of Jericho natural amphitheater, crossing many creeks and streams.
We'll hike in Saturday morning, set up camp near the cemetery, explore the Walls of Jericho, then return to camp for dinner under the full moon!
This is not an easy hike. Be prepared for mud, slippery spots, and many wet crossings. Do not attempt this hike if you are unsteady on your feet or are not in good shape.
We'll meet at Target Hickory Hollow and carpool from there. Be sure to offer gas money to your carpool driver. We plan on parking and starting from the Alabama trailhead then returning there on Sunday.
Tent, sleeping bag and pad, food, water, snacks, utensils, toiletries, flashlight or headlamp, clothing appropriate for the weather. Optional items: camp stove, camera, ghost stories.
Also I recommend you pack water shoes or sandals to change into to make the last creek crossing. We'll change out of our boots into water shoes, then change back after we come back over Turkey Creek.
Let the event hosts know if you have any questions. If this is your first backpacking trip, you must email David at [masked] to let him know.
Optional meal at Crust Pizza in Sewanee on the way home Sunday.
Two resources on Walls of Jericho:
Kelly's GPS map on Backpacker Magazine site (http://kl.am/bpwoj)
State Natural Area page (http://www.state.tn.us/environment/na/natareas/jericho/)
From Nashville take I-24 east toward Chattanooga. Take exit 127 on Highway 64 and turn right toward Winchester (do not miss this exit or you'll be stuck heading up Monteagle!). Stay on Highway 64 for about 15 miles and turn south on Hwy 16 and go about 18 miles to the Alabama trailhead; about one mile south of the state line.
