March Meetup: "Branching Out From Twig" with Paul M. Jones

1910 21st Ave S

Nashville PHP is finally back in person! Join us this month at our new location for Paul M. Jones's talk Branching Out From Twig; or, "Yes, you *can* do that with native PHP". He'll give us a short history, discuss why we use them, and review the tradeoffs made by current templating systems. We'll also look at the challenges involved with doing a static analysis of your templates.

We'll have food for everyone, so please RSVP so we know how much to provide!

Fun fact: Did you know PHP was originally designed to be a dynamic templating system for webpages? The creator Rasmus Lerdorf famously said, "I don't know how to stop it, there was never any intent to write a programming language [...] I just kept adding the next logical step on the way."

Parking: There are a few spots to the side and rear of the building, but please *do not* park in the church parking lot. (They have a sign warning you. It’s hard to miss.) You’re welcome to park anywhere else. After 5pm, street parking is usually easy to find, especially along Magnolia Blvd.

April Meetup: "Cool Tools for PHP Development" with Ben Ramsey

1910 21st Ave S

Good developer experience (DX) is critical in the tools we use, whether external- or internal-facing. The easier it is for your team to do their job, the happier and more efficient they'll be. So far, the JavaScript community has cornered the market on developer tooling, but the PHP community is catching up.

In this talk, I'll crack open my toolbox and share some of the tools I use in daily development and why I think they improve the DX of projects I work on. We'll look at some familiar tools, such as PHPUnit and PHP_CodeSniffer, along with new tools like PHPStan and Psalm. I'll show how to configure these tools for better workflows through Composer scripts and plugins. We'll also see how to standardize your team's workflow with CaptainHook. By the end, I hope you'll leave with some good ideas for improving your team's DX.
