We enjoy day walks, multi-day walks and summiting mountains, mostly in the North Island of New Zealand.

Join us for learning about how to plan for a simple snow trip, how to use avalanche rescue equipment, crampons, ice axe, and how to arrest a slide. Completing this event will give you greater confidence on the snow. This event (or NZ Alpine Club snowcraft course) is requird for attending our snow trips.

- Attending this event is a requirement for attending our future winter trips.

SATURDAY 6TH JULY:
- Sunrise 7:37am. Sunset 5:07pm.
- 6:30am Begin drive to the top of Bruce Road.
- Enjoy the day learning about and practicing skills.
- Drive down to Whakapapa Holiday Park.
SUNDAY 7TH JULY:
- 6:30am Begin drive to the top of Bruce Road.
- Enjoy the day learning about and practicing skills.
- 3:00pm Begin drive home.
- 8:00pm Arrive in Auckland.
GETTING THERE:
- We will carpool.
- If 1 passenger, please give driver $85.
- 2 passengers, $75 each.
- 3 passengers, $65 each.
WHAKAPAPA HOLIDAY PARK:
- Has hot showers, shared kitchen with stoves, microwaves, crockery, cutlery.
- $32/night for a backpacker bed.
- $23/night for a tent site.

- Thermal socks (e.g. wool).
- Winter boots with stiff soles (i.e. three quarter shank or full shank).
- Long johns (e.g. merino).
- Rain pants (e.g. gore-tex or pertex).
- Gaitors (up to your knees).
- Thermal baselayer (e.g. merino).
- Thermal jacket (e.g. puffy synthetic insulated).
- Rain Jacket (e.g. gore-tex or pertex).
- Sunscreen.
- Sunglasses with lateral (side) protection.
- Sunglasses lens category 4 is darker and safer than regular category 3 lens.
- Mountaineering or bike helmet.
- Winter gloves (e.g. ski gloves) and glove liner.
- Ice axe (regular straight or slightly-bent shaft)
- Umbilical leash to attach ice axe to your waist (e.g. Black Diamond Slinger Leash) or buy cord from organiser.
- Backpack.
- Pack liner (or rubbish sack) to keep bag contents dry.
- Avalanche Rescue Kit (transceiver & batteries, snow probe, snow shovel).
- Crampons (test that they fit the boots).
- Food & Water.
- No jeans, no cotton, no microspikes.

ICE AXE:
- When you stand up straight, and hold the ice axe like a walking stick, the spike should reach your ankle.
WINTER BOOTS:
- Test fit while wearing thermal socks.
- Check toes have a lot of room to move.
- Test kicking something repeatedly, check toes aren't hitting the boot inside.
- Check crampons and gaitors fit the boots.
LEASH:
- Either buy an umbilical leash (e.g. Black Diamond Slinger) for attaching ice axe to your waste area, or buy some shock cord from organiser for $10.
- Wrist leashes are tedious and inconvenient, they are not suitable.
SLIDING:
- Before we practice sliding on snow, wear cheap over-pants and jacket, so that we do not damage our expensive gore-tex or pertex jacket and pants.
WEATHER:
- This event is dependant on there being sufficient snow.
- If we need to reschedule, this event and following events will likely be modified to the following weekends.
- Whakapapa Holiday Park makes it easy to modify our bookings.

- 6:30am Remaining cars leave Whakapapa Holiday Park and drive to Mangatepopo carpark.
- 7:00am All arrive at Mangatepopo carpark. Begin walking.
- Car shuttle back to Whakapapa Holiday Park.
