Wordpress under the hood

This is a new meetup group with an "under the hood" theme. In this meetup organizer Mark D. Hamill will take attendees "under the hood" of Wordpress, a popular lightweight content management system optimized for the web. Wordpress is more than a blogging platform but a one size fits all solution for many websites.

The meeting is designed for tech newbies, local entrepreneurs, and people generally curious about how the Internet and the web work, much the way a new driver might be curious to look under the hood of the car and know where various components are and how they work. It's designed to tell you what you need to know, but not too much, to help you make informed choices and business decisions.

We have a great conference room that seats up to 25 so bring a laptop if you have it to take notes and follow along. If you have Wordpress already, you can look under the hood of your own site. We'll discuss the general Wordpress architecture, how it works, etc., but hope to jump into the internals, look at how themes and plug-ins work and where they are located, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of Wordpress.

Subsequent meetings can discuss topics of interest to the group, so be prepared to advocate your ideas. Mark is a highly experienced web professional, a retired federal employee who led a team that ran the largest website for the U.S. Department of the Interior and does consulting for clients all over the world. Specific directions: drive up Main Entrance for Hampshire College at 893 West St. Amherst MA 01002. Come to stop sign and look for signs that say Franklin Patterson Hall (FPH), which will direct you to take a left. Look for more signs that say Franklin Patterson Hall on your right. Those will direct you into a parking lot right next to the building location.
