This talk will explore the impact of Theosophy on art in the 20th century. Focusing on the examples of Hilma af Klint and Wassily Kandinsky we will examine the relationship between eastern Esoteric teachings and the emergence of western abstractionism.
Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s 19th century movement of Theosophy brought a depth of understanding to eastern teaching long since lost to the materialist west. Her work paved the way for a different vision, that of the invisible and metaphysical which influenced art, music, literature and philosophy for decades to come.
In this talk we will investigate her life and work as well as that of af Klint and Kandisnky to highlight the representations of timeless principles in abstract art that continue to capture our imagination to this day.
