Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It goes beyond sympathy, which is more about feeling for someone, while empathy involves feeling with them. Empathy can foster deeper relationships, emotional intelligence, and social cohesion—but it also raises questions about boundaries, responsibility, and emotional labor. Is empathy always good? Can it be exhausting? How do we cultivate it wisely?

  1. What does empathy mean to you personally, and how do you distinguish it from sympathy or compassion?
  2. Do you believe empathy is innate or can it be learned? How did you develop your own sense of empathy?
  3. Can empathy be harmful or draining if not balanced with boundaries? How do you protect yourself?
  4. How do you respond when someone’s experience is very different from your own—does it make empathy harder?
  5. Is it possible to be empathetic without agreeing with someone’s choices or beliefs?
  6. How do cultural or social differences affect our capacity for empathy?
  7. Has someone ever shown you empathy in a way that deeply impacted you? What made it meaningful?
  8. In what situations do you find it hardest to feel empathy?
  9. Can we have too much empathy for others and not enough for ourselves?
  10. How does empathy influence conflict resolution or forgiveness?
  11. How can we cultivate empathy in a world that often encourages detachment or division?

The meetup will be structured in a way to promote small group discussion so everyone has a chance to listen, be heard, and really dive into the discussion.

Due to the increased group size, we're making a few changes to how our discussions will be structured.

We'll arrange tables of 6 participants each, without a moderator. When you arrive, please gather at the front near the escalator. Once enough people are assembled, I'll escort each group of 6 to their table to begin the discussion, and continue doing this as more participants arrive.

Each table will receive a sheet containing the topic description and discussion questions. Feel free to take a photo or refer to the event page to have your own copy handy.

The official event time is from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, but some of us stay longer, transitioning into informal conversations beyond the topic. You're welcome to join any other ongoing discussions once your initial group wraps up and members start leaving.

Please do not go directly to a table upon arrival; instead, wait at the front area by the escalator. This approach will help us manage seating smoothly and ensure everyone enjoys an organized and engaging discussion experience.
