### Exploring window functions and visual calculations
The first DAX window functions (INDEX, OFFSET, and WINDOW) were introduced in December 2022, soon followed by RANK and ROWNUMBER. Visual calculations were introduced in February 2024. Both of these features are still in preview, but provide a rich set of features to learn and explore. In this session, I will demonstrate how both features can simplify DAX expressions, avoid clutter in your Power BI semantic models, and make your reports more flexible.
I will cover examples including:
Using window functions to:
o Perform calculations “per partition”, such as top customer per group.
o Simplify rank calculations compared with RANKX.
o Calculate ranks based on multiple columns.
o
Using visual calculations to:
o Perform calculations that work with any date field placed on a visual’s axis.
o Filling blanks with zeros (or any other value).
o Identify top/bottom values.
o Normalize measure values.
o Navigate a visual’s hierarchy.
I will provide a demonstration PBIX for you to take away and adapt to your own reporting needs.
If you want to extend your DAX knowledge, simplify your Power BI semantic models, and add some exciting and flexible tools to your Power BI arsenal, then this session is for you!
