General mahjong session

Casual session in Bally's Casino in Newcastle, in May.

Mostly using old-style Hong Kong rules - which is a very good place to start - and we'll explain the basics if you've not played much before. Score sheets and western-numbered tiles will be available, so you don't need to learn Chinese numbers beforehand! Riichi fans also welcome to grab a table and play some Japanese style mahjong.

Should start around 7pm, traffic permitting. We should be off to the side of Freya's Bar, and we won't be the groups of Chinese playing at a brisk rate(!)

Book suggestion: "Mahjong: House Rules from Across the Asian Diaspora" by Nicole Wong. Great intro to the general game and the key styles.
