Our philosophy discussion group meets this coming Tuesday, May 12th, from 3:00–4:30 pm in Room 1 at the OASIS Senior Center, AFTER WHICH (and this is the important part) we repair to El Cholo for Happy Hour, featuring $5 taquitos. Frankly, Aristotle himself would approve. What could be more better?
This week’s discussion continues our noble quest to understand philosophy and religion, given the small but awkward fact that the universe is 13.8 billion years old.
Here’s what’s on the menu:
- Miracles.
Last week, during our discussion of God, someone brought up miracles—so naturally, we’re going there.
What is a miracle? Can one be “performed,” or do they merely… happen?
(Have any of you witnessed a miracle? Been near one? Or at least heard a good second‑hand miracle story?) - Spinoza: The Grand Finale.
We’ll finally wrap up Spinoza, with comparisons to Jainism, Buddhism, and Daoism—all carefully included to placate Denny, which is itself something of a philosophical achievement. - Eudaimonia, à la Aristotle.
How to live a good life.
How to flourish. How to load a dishwasher.
How to develop virtue.
Which dishwashing liquid best reflects moral excellence.

Even though few MeetUp people sign up, we typcally get 20-30 people in the discussion group. Here's the scoop. When you are over 50 years old, lots of weird and strange things happen and it's a great time to think about WHAT IT ALL MEANS.
In this discussion group, we will discuss a variety of philosophy topics, and try to understand how they affect our lives.
This will be low key: lots of talking, not much lecturing, and the concepts will be made easy. It will be FUN! I promise or your money back! Except it's free anyway!
We'll talk about cool things like Plato's allegory of the cave, the Myth of Sisyphus, and ALL SORTS of topics. Ovens will be available so we can BAKE OUR OWN PHILOSOPHY! I mean, conceptually.
