About us
Keep Owls flying: Unfortunately, using Meetup to post our events is not free. If you enjoy our events, please consider donating $5 or $10. Give your cash to any of our volunteer organizers or Venmo @Angie-Brumett. Thank you!
Welcome to the Night Owls! We do everything but mornings.
We are a social group of people who keep odd hours. We are kind, respectful, can laugh at ourselves, and care about community. We hold many events in or near Central Phoenix, anywhere along the light rail including downtown Tempe and downtown Mesa, and Old Town Scottsdale. On a fairly regular basis, we venture outside of these areas too.
Our two rules to join:
- Clear Profile Photo: A real, recognizable photo of your face. Not distant or blurry, and no one else in the photo with you.
- Real First Name: A real first name is used on your profile. Not a handle, initials, or organization name.
These rules are important to us because we meet up in person, often at night.
Please note:
We will decline/remove you from the group if you don't permanently follow these rules, frequently no-show or vanish from events, solicit our members, or become inactive for over 90 days. Inactive members in good standing are welcome to rejoin at any time.
We look forward to meeting you in person soon!
Sincerely,
The Odd Squad

Full(ish) Moon Paddle at Saguaro Lake
BIG 5 Sporting Goods, 2930 N. Power Rd., Mesa, AZ, USThis will be a very chill paddling event at Saguaro Lake. We'll put in / out at Butcher Jones Recreation Site from the beach, starting at about 7:00 pm. The sun sets at 7:42 PM and the full(ish) moon rises at 6:17 PM, so we should have plenty of light to get out on the water then enjoy the moon. We'll mostly be in an area of the lake where the motorboats don't go, so the water is likely to be relatively calm, but the whole place may somewhat busy on a Saturday. It's totally fine if you want to just float / sip on your choice of beverage / socialize at any point... this is about enjoying the moonlight and scenery, not power-paddling! No guests, adults only. Please stay near the group for safety.
Bring your own or rent a kayak / paddle board from https://azkayaks.com in Mesa. They allow you to return after they close at 5pm with their locker system. Their last rental goes out at 4:30 PM that day I believe. We will have an electric pump & a manual pump for people to use if you bring something inflatable and don't have your own pump, but bringing your own electric pump is strongly encouraged!!
PFD's are required, and you'll want to also have a bunch of other basic gear like lights, dry bag, water shoes, etc. If you're new to paddling, reach out and we'll help you plan ahead! Bug spray is usually a good idea at this location also. We will have glow necklaces & sticks to share.
We'll meet at 5:30 pm in the parking lot of the Big 5 Sporting Goods at 2930 N Power Rd, Mesa, AZ 85215, along the east wall of the store.
From here you can figure out a carpool or take your own ride if you have a Tonto Pass and want to deal with parking. It's about a half hour drive to Butcher Jones Recreation Site from Big 5. If you want to buy your own Tonto Pass, please do so ahead of time. That Big 5 Sporting Goods sells them, as does the Bashas' in the same plaza.
