Hike Description
Try this 6 mile loop trail near Mountainside, New Jersey. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 10 min to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and horseback riding, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

This loop follows the Purple Trail starting from the Trailside Nature Center parking area. The loop is mostly wooded and travels along the shores of Surprise Lake at points. Watchung Reservation is the largest nature reserve in Union County, New Jersey and consists of the upper valley of Blue Brook between First and Second Watchung Mountains.

📍 Meeting point: There is a Parking lot right next to the Trailside Nature and Science Center. I've posted a map of the parking lot in relation to the trailhead (See photo section below)

The Coordinates are (40.68279,-74.37376). Please use these for GPS purposes. These coordinates will take you to the Trailhead. The parking lot is just off the trailhead.

⏳ Hiking Time: 2 to 3 hrs. This could change according to the group pace. (i.e. time to take photos and breaks)

There will be a 15 minute grace period for those running late. We cannot wait longer than 9:15 AM to begin, as it's not fair to those that showed up on time.
