"Kill the Messenger" is the story of Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Gary Webb, who published a series in the San Jose Mercury News in the '90s about how contras backed by the CIA were smuggling cocaine into the US that was being distributed as crack on the streets of L.A. The story alleged that profits from the sales were were being used to fund opponents of Nicaragua's communist government -- and that the CIA was aware of all this.
The story predictably generated a huge amount of controversy, and the Merc eventually backed away from it, effectively killing Webb's career. In 2004, Webb was found dead from two gunshot wounds to the head, which a coroner ruled a suicide. Subsequent investigations by other outlets appeared to vindicate Webb's reporting.
