Star Party and Camping at Davis Mountains
Details
Camping at Fort Davis in the Davis Mountains and Star Party at the McDonald Observatory.
The Davis Mountains region is one of the premier designted dark sky areas in the world.
We will camp at Davis Mountains State Park. DON'T WAIT TO MAKE YOUR RESERVATION, or you will miss out.
The park is about 7 hours SW of the DFW area. The Davis Mountain are beautiful and unique. Well worth the drive.
On Saturday October 10th we will go to the observatory for a Star Party. Reservations are recommended to go to the star party at the Mcdonald Observatory and should be made about 3 weeks in advance (Sept. 19th). The Star Party starts about half an hour after sunset and last for 2 hours. October 10th is a new moon night, so the stars will be brilliant.
During the day there is a variety of things to do. There are 12 miles of hiking and biking trails in the park and more beyond the park. If your not into hiking but want to view the senic sights you can go on a 5 mile drive thru the senic areas. If history is your thing, drive 7 miles into Ft Davis and tour Fort Davis National Historic site. You can also tour the historic Indian Lodge and various archeological sites.
The weather in October is moderate during the day, usually in the 70's but can range from the low 60's up into the 80's. Night time temps are typically in the 50's but can range from the 40's to the 60's.
The area averages about 14-18 inches a year. So expect to be in a drought situation with frequent fire restrictions. For cooking purposes plan to use a propane or containerized fuel stoves or charcoal grill.
I am going to have dinner in town, you are free to join me if you wish.
I have reserved site 045 and I will be arriving on Thursday the 8th of October.. It is a water and electic site.
You are responsible for your own wellbeing, and making your own reservations.
