Northwest Sailing Association (NWSA) is thrilled to announce our upcoming presentation by NWSA Fleet Captain Kurt Hermann, whose remarkable sailing journey took him from the bustling shores of Chicago, down the winding Midwest River System, to the coastal waters of Mobile, Alabama, and beyond to the breathtaking islands of the Bahamas!
Join us as Kurt shares stories from his picturesque route aboard his beloved sailboat, "S/V Odyssey,” a 40-foot Island Packet 380. He will recount his experiences navigating diverse waterways - from the intricate river systems of the Midwest to the turquoise waters of the open ocean - and the challenges and unique communities he encountered along the way.

⚓️Meet Our Speaker…⚓️
Kurt Hermann is NWSA’s Fleet Captain and a seasoned sailor. He has been boating his entire life, having grown up in a family of boating enthusiasts. In his late 20s, he decided to take up sailing and leave the powerboats behind. He currently sails an Island Packet 380.

In 2019, he and his wife, Sue, embarked on a two-year trip to sail the Caribbean, taking the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Canadian Maritime Province's and traveling south along the east coast toward the Caribbean. Unfortunately, this trip was cut short in The Bahamas when Covid struck. He returned to Chicago in 2020, coming back through the Erie Canal. In 2024, Kurt returned to the Bahamas, this time taking the 1,300-mile Midwest River System from Chicago to Mobile, Alabama. His boat is currently hauled out for hurricane season in Port Charlotte FL.
